Charlton Athletic’s woes on the pitch continued this weekend as they once again struggled to record a victory.
It is now eight straight games without a win for Lee Bowyer’s side as they were defeated by a solitary goal up at Middlesbrough.
Boro needed just 52 seconds to score too with midfielder George Saville pouncing on Britt Assombalonga’s deflected effort to slot past Dillon Phillips in the Addicks net.
Over 500 supporters made the 514-mile round trip to the north-east, so they have quite rightly been venting their anger on social media with left-back Ben Purrington taking most of the flak.
Per SofaScore, the 23-year-old recorded the lowest rating of any player on the pitch with his one error, two fouls, 25% duels won undoubtedly contributing to that.
‘Dreadful’ was the keyword used by some to describe Purrington’s performance while other fans have started to believe that the defender isn’t good enough to be playing at Championship level.
Meanwhile, further supporters spoke about the defender and the squad as a whole with things gradually taking a turn for the worst at The Valley.
Although, Bowyer has had to contend with a ridiculously long injury list as more and more players seem to be getting injured by the week.
With the club now in the hands of new ownership, January makes for an interesting month, but there’s still a handful of games remaining between now and then so the Addicks must ensure they don’t slip closer to the dreaded drop zone anytime soon.
