Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has recently revealed on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast that Manchester City are one of the clubs ‘very closely’ monitoring the situation of Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.
The 20-year-old has been a revelation since joining the Bundesliga side in January of this year, having scored 33 goals in just 32 appearances for Lucien Favre’s side.
The £90 million-rated forward has started this season in sensational form, contributing 10 goals and two assists in just eight Bundesliga appearances, resulting in an incredible average rating of 7.83 (per WhoScored).
Therefore, it is no surprise that he is attracting interest from sides across Europe, with Romano suggesting that the Citizens could be one side to take advantage of the Norwegian international’s release clause in the future, which is reportedly not set to kick in until 2022.
Pep Guardiola recently committed to a new contract with Manchester City, which means he is set to stay as manager until 2023 but if the Citizens can sign Haaland before then, the Spanish manager would surely be keen to extend that stay further.
The Leeds-born forward is a natural goalscorer and would surely go some way towards replacing the goals of Sergio Aguero, with the legendary Argentinian forward seemingly set to leave at the end of this season when his contract expires.
He has earned the praise of Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc, who said:
“For us, he is worth his weight in gold because he can carry the team along. Every minute, he shows that he wants to be successful.”
Therefore, it seems clear that Dortmund are desperate to keep hold of Haaland, but if his release clause stays in place then there is not much they can do if a side such as Manchester City decides to pay it.
Considering the creativity that City have in their side, with Guardiola boasting incredible talents such as Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling, it seems inevitable that Haaland would score goals aplenty in the Premier League, so the Citizens must do everything they can to ensure they are the ones to sign him when he leaves Dortmund.
And, in other news… Guardiola was let down by ace who completed just 1/11 crosses against Porto
