Pablo Hernandez continued another brilliant season in a Leeds United shirt with an assist and a winning goal in the 3-2 win against Millwall at Elland Road on Saturday.
Confusingly, the 33-year-old missed out on a spot in the Sky Bet Championship team of the season despite having 10 goals and 11 assists when it was announced, and now the Spaniard has played a huge role in lifting the Yorkshire outfit back into the automatic promotion places.
He once again showed just how versatile he can be as he was deployed through the middle up top in the latter stages against the Lions, as Marcelo Bielsa’s punt to play him there paid off.
Hernandez can also play behind the striker or out wide – he has featured in the latter the most for the Whites this term – and his record when it comes to key passes on a per game average during the 2018/19 campaign is genuinely astounding.
Leeds fans know Hernandez is class, but these numbers are something else.
According to WhoScored, the 33-year-old has averaged three key passes in every one of his 32 league outings this season, a whopping 1.2 more than teammate and next in line Ezgjan Alioski, who has 1.8 in 39 appearances.
He is also averaging 0.7 more than any other player in the Championship, including Aston Villa ace Jack Grealish who is one of four individuals on 2.3.
The Spaniard also has a better record than everyone in the Premier League aside from Leicester City’s James Maddison, who has matched his record in 30 top flight showings.
Hernandez may not be getting any younger, but should Leeds win promotion come what May they have a player who will still be hugely influential for them next term.
