As reported by the Daily Mirror, West Brom are set to do battle with two giants of European football for the signature of Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho.
What’s the word?
The Mirror report that Tony Pulis could return to Liverpool in an effort to sign out of favour Sakho after failing to bring him to The Hawthorns in a summer loan move.
With AC Milan and Inter Milan BOTH tracking his situation, the Baggies might be set for an unlikely tussle with the European Cup winning clubs.
Such competition would be fierce, but Albion are keen to get their man after watching his progress, or lack thereof, at Liverpool since the defender rejected a switch in August.
Why leave Liverpool?
Sakho joined Liverpool in 2013 and despite making close to 80 appearances for the Anfield club in three years, he hasn’t featured for the first-team since April of this year.
Klopp has favoured a Dejan Lovren / Joel Matip pairing this term and has even drafted in Lucas Leiva ahead of natural defenders like Sakho.
It’s paying dividends with Liverpool riding high in the table in second place and having conceded fewer goals than 14 other clubs in the division.
Why join West Brom?
West Brom are no slouches in the Premier League this season, currently sitting in 9th position ahead of the likes of Southampton and last season’s champions Leicester City.
A move to The Hawthorns would represent the chance for a fresh start for a player who is still just 26 and about to hit the prime of his career.
First-team football and a competitive team in the Premier League could be just the ticket he needs.
Is it enough to escape the lure of both San Siro giants? Only Sakho knows the answer but we’ll be watching with interest.
